Odisha doubles uniform allowance for police personnel

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi approved a twofold increase in the annual uniform allowance for Odisha Police personnel, on Thursday. The ambitious move is intended to enhance morale and support the welfare of police force in the State.

This decision marks a significant shift in funding, with uniform allowances for ranks from constable to inspector seeing a doubling in their previous amounts.

Details of the enhancements

Inspectors will now be entitled to an annual uniform allowance of Rs 8,600, elevated from Rs 4,300. Sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors will see their allowances increased to Rs 8,400 yearly, up from Rs 4,200. Havildars and constables are now set to receive Rs 10,000 compared to the prior Rs 5,000, which reflects the government's commitment to enhancing job conditions, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) mentioned.

Furthermore, former army personnel within the Special Striking Force are included in this provision, their annual uniform allowance increasing to Rs 11,800 from Rs 5,900.

Chief Minister Majhi also announced a rise in the annual extra duty incentive, which now reaches a maximum of Rs 25,000 for constables and similar ranks, and goes up to Rs 30,000 for havildars and equivalent positions.

Gratitude towards this initiative was expressed by leaders of the constable, havildar, and sepoy unions during a meeting at Loka Seva Bhawan. Chief Minister Majhi urged the police force to maintain focus on reinforcing law and order across the State, particularly emphasising the importance of providing timely support to vulnerable citizens.

The CM highlighted the necessity for Odisha Police to incorporate training techniques from other states, emphasising the development of a proficient and responsive police force.

This meeting, attended by senior officials such as Director General of Police YB Khurania and Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, also included the announcement of over 16,000 new police force positions to enhance the police-to-population ratio.
