In a major breakthrough, a dreaded criminal who had been absconding since 2022 was finally apprehended by the police in a dramatic, film-style operation at Alara village in Cuttack on Monday.
As per sources, the accused, Bighneswar Nayak, was on the run for years, successfully evading police while continuing his criminal activities.
Disguised as a kanwariya pilgrim, Bighneswar was reportedly intercepted by a special police team from Narasinghpur police station while en route to the Bol Bom pilgrimage early this morning. Acting on intelligence inputs, a team led by Athagarh DSP laid a trap and successfully arrested the accused from Alara village.
As per police sources, Bighneswar has over 40 criminal cases registered against him in various police stations, including charges under the Arms Act, robbery, snatching, and bomb attacks. He was wanted in more than 23 cases,and had been evading arrest for an extended period.

The operation marks a significant breakthrough for the district police in curbing organized criminal activity ahead of the ongoing religious festivities.
"Bighneswar Nayak was on the run from 2017. He is wanted in more than 23 cases. As many as 18 warrants have been issued against him. As many as 40 criminal cases have been registered against him in various police stations. Acting on intelligence inputs, we managed to nab him in civil dress," said Athagarh SDPO Biswajit Mohanty.
