In a disturbing incident, a newborn girl was found abandoned near the main gate of Mahidharpada Community Health Centre (CHC) on Sunday, under Cuttack Sadar police limits in this district. The infant was discovered at the base of a Chakunda tree right in front of the health centre’s main entrance.

A woman from a nearby village spotted the baby and quickly rushed her into the health centre. Doctors in the hospital administered initial medical care to the newborn.

Shortly afterwards, local police arrived on the scene after receiving a tip-off and rescued the girl child. The baby was then transferred to Sishu Bhawan, a specialised child care hospital in Cuttack.

Officials from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) have taken the abandoned baby girl into custody and begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

However, a major question remains unanswered as to how the newborn end up near the hospital gate?

When asked, an on-duty medical officer denied any knowledge of how the child came there. Hospital authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital premises to uncover the truth behind the mysterious abandonment.

“Somebody had allegedly abandoned an unknown child there (near the main gate). The spot where the child was discarded cannot be visualised. Some of our cleaning staff rescued and brought the child to the CHC for treatment,” Mahidharpada health centre in-charge, Dr. Subash Chandra Gochhayat, said when contacted.

“The baby was kept in a warmer and was provided medical care. Later, she was handed over to the police after she recovered. The local police will decide to whom she will be handed over in turn,” the hospital in-charge Gochhayat added.
