Following a ragging complaint at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, two house surgeons were fined Rs 25,000 each on Monday. The decision was made during an Anti-Ragging Committee meeting after a thorough inquiry into the May 12 incident.

Anti-Ragging Committee takes action

According to sources, the medical college authorities have taken disciplinary action against two house surgeons for their involvement in a ragging incident that occurred on May 12. Based on a complaint filed by a fourth-year MBBS student, both individuals were found guilty of misconduct and were accordingly penalised.

The victim had previously submitted a written complaint to the college dean on May 13, identifying the two house surgeons involved in the incident. The matter was subsequently reviewed by the Anti-Ragging Committee.

A meeting held at the college finalised the action. This decision is part of a ‘zero-tolerance’ approach towards ragging on campus. The authorities reiterated their commitment to a safe and respectful academic environment, urging students to come forward against any form of harassment.

Further monitoring and sensitisation measures are expected to be undertaken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

"Names of the two persons mentioned in the complaint are of house surgeons. Based on the complaint, a meeting was held today, and it was found that a verbal spat had occurred on the intervening day between the house surgeons andthe  victim fourth-year MBBS student,” MKCG Superintendent, Professor Suchitra Das said to mediapersons.

“No physical assault had occurred between them. However, based on the magnitude of ragging, the Committee decided to fix the responsibility with the house surgeons and penalise them with Rs 25,000 each,” MKCG Superintendent Das added.
