The body of a minor boy was found in an abandoned tank near a Madrasa in Nilapalli village under Ranpur police limits of Nayagarh district on Friday. Subsequently, the Nayagarh police launched an investigation into the matter and discovered that the minor was sodomised before being killed and dumped.

According to reports, investigations revealed that the boy was strangled to death by his schoolmates after being subjected to ‘unnatural’ sexual assault. Five juveniles have been apprehended and sent to a correctional home in connection with the crime.

Planned assault and murder

According to Nayagarh Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Subhash Chandra Panda, the victim had been repeatedly assaulted by one of his classmates. On August 31, after forcing himself on the boy, the accused attempted to push him into a septic tank, but the boy managed to escape.

On September 2, around 11 am, the same classmate, along with three others, again assaulted the victim. Following the assault, the group strangled the boy to death and dumped his body in a disused Madrasa tank.

“During the investigation, it was established that two juveniles were involved in the act of sodomy, while three others took part in the murder. All five were taken into custody and produced before the Court,” ASP Panda said.

Case registered, probe continues

Police registered a case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on September 3 after gathering sufficient evidence linking the accused to the incident. The juveniles, identified as children in conflict with the law, have been shifted to a juvenile correctional facility.

ASP Panda described the crime as a “ghastly incident” and confirmed that the roles of each accused have been established during the inquiry. “We apprehended all five and produced them before the court after collecting sufficient evidence,” he added.

Meanwhile, police have assured a thorough investigation to determine whether there were earlier unreported incidents of abuse.
