The Odisha government has unveiled a Rs 9,200 crore overhaul for four major healthcare institutions, marking one of its largest healthcare infrastructure pushes to date.

The decision, finalised during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, aims to transform VIMSAR, MKCG, Rourkela Government Hospital, and Bhubaneswar’s Capital Hospital into state-of-the-art facilities.

Mega Upgrades for Key Hospitals

VIMSAR Medical College (Burla): Allocated Rs 1,594 crore, its bed capacity will jump from 1,485 to 2,861.

MKCG Medical College (Berhampur): With Rs 1,014.13 crore, beds will increase from 1,583 to 2,033.

Rourkela Government Hospital: A Rs 627.16 crore revamp will expand beds from 437 to 763.

Capital Hospital (Bhubaneswar): The biggest investment of Rs 5,958 crore will boost beds from 750 to 2,582.

The project focuses on modernising infrastructure, adding advanced medical equipment, and improving patient care.

Earlier Push for District Medical Colleges

The development follows the state’s earlier announcement this month to establish new medical colleges in Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, and Nabarangpur.

Currently, Odisha has 12 functional medical colleges, with two nearing inauguration. The 2025-26 state budget earmarked funds for these institutions as part of a national scheme where the Centre and state share costs in a 60:40 ratio.

In that address, during the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY launch in Cuttack, CM Majhi had stressed job creation, noting 4,000 medical professionals were recruited in the past 10 months and that steps will be taken to recruit 5,000 more doctors and dentists.

With these investments, Odisha targets a 30% rise in hospital bed capacity and improved speciality care access for its rapidly growing population.
