In a significant development in the mysterious death of a Plus-3 student from Pattamundai in Kendrapara district, the police have detained her boyfriend of the deceased student from Chennai for questioning.
The young woman was found charred to death inside her house under suspicious circumstances last week, triggering widespread outrage and speculation.
According to police sources, the boyfriend was taken into custody based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family, who had accused him of mentally harassing and blackmailing their daughter. The girl’s father had earlier alleged that continuous threats and emotional torture by her partner could have led her to take the extreme step.
The accused had reportedly been absconding since the incident, but Kendrapara police successfully tracked him down in Chennai and brought him in for interrogation. Investigators suspect his involvement in the events leading up to the student’s death, though they are also exploring other angles, including possible foul play.
Locals and family members had raised doubts over how the girl could have tied herself to a grill gate before the fire. The presence of chemical traces and a matchbox at the scene further deepened suspicions.
Meanwhile, Kendrapara SP, along with the forensic team, is scheduled to visit the spot for further investigation into the matter. The police are expected to question the boyfriend and the family members of the deceased in front of each other.
The investigation is ongoing, and police officials are yet to make an official statement.
