Allegations of custodial torture have surfaced against Balichandrapur Police in Jajpur district, after a youth was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack in a critical condition.

According to sources, Rabindra Mallick of Mahipur village under Anaka panchayat was picked up by police around 4 pm on Sunday in connection with a family dispute. His family has alleged that Rabindra was subjected to third-degree torture while in custody at the Balichandrapur police station.

Later, Mallick’s health reportedly deteriorated. When his family members reached the police station three days later and insisted on seeing him, the police took them along to Cuttack SCB Medical College where he was admitted, sources added.

It is also alleged that following the torture, Mallick consumed poison while in police custody. However, police officials have denied any wrongdoing, stating that the youth fell ill during his stay at the police station and was shifted to the hospital as a precaution.

Mallick was not tortured. He was unwell, and accordingly admitted to the hospital, source in the police stated.

While Mallick remains under medical care, with police deployed at the hospital, the incident has raised serious questions over alleged custodial practices.
