In Odisha, five children aged three to five years tragically drowned during Kartika Purnima festivities. Incidents occurred in Balasore, Malkangiri, and Cuttack districts while retrieving floating boats.

The joy of Kartika Purnima festivities turned tragic for as many as five families as five children aged about three to five years old drowned to death on Friday. The mishaps are learnt to have occurred when the deceased children went into the water to bring floating boats.

In a shocking incident, two girls aged about five years drowned in a pond at Panishapada village under Basta police limits in Balasore district. The deceased have been identified as the daughters of Dilip Kumar Das and Manas Nanda, two villagers of Panishapada. 

As per reports, the girls were last seen playing in the backyard. Later, they might have noticed boats floating in the nearby pond and went there to bring them while not being watched by their family members.

Not finding them at the spot where they were playing, their family members launched a frantic search. Later, they were rescued from the pond and rushed to the nearby Rasagovindapur Community Health Centre (CHC). 

However, it was too late by then. The doctors at the CHC declared them received dead. 

In another shocking incident reported from Saundia village under Khaira police limits in the same district, a three-year-old boy drowned in a pond. 

Similar incidents were also reported from Champanagar in Malkangiri and Salepur in Cuttack where a minor girl (age not known) and a three-year-old boy drowned.
