A farmer was reportedly shot dead on his farm in Fasigan village under Dhenkanal Sadar police station in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The deceased was identified as Gobinda Chandra Nayak. According to reports, Nayak used to sleep in a house on his farm to safeguard his crops and did the same on Saturday. However, at about 3 am unidentified miscreants allegedly approached him and flashed a torchlight.

Upon noticing this, Nayak reacted, prompting the miscreants to open fire. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Family members' statements:

Family members stated that Nayak’s elder brother, who also slept on the farm, heard the gunshots and rushed to check on his brother. After noticing multiple gunshot wounds, he dialled an ambulance, which was allegedly unavailable at the time. The man’s family then rushed him to the hospital in their own vehicle but doctors were unable to save Nayak.

“The incident happened at about 3 to 3:30 am. We have several crops and poultry at the farm for which my brother often visits the site at night to keep vigil. This night, however, he was shot by some miscreants and it may be because of some past enmity,” said Barun Kumar Nayak, yonder brother of the deceased.

Sources added that the deceased was a resident of Kalanga Chakundanali village and the family’s farm is near the Shiva temple in Fasigan, having Nayak commute a distance of 10 approximately kilometres to and fro every night to check the crops. It is alleged that someone may have followed him during this time.
