A resident of Dwarabatipur, a village in Odisha’s Cuttack district, allegedly threatened to self-immolate outside Khuntuni Police Station on Wednesday. The woman, identified as Mamata Behera, claimed she would take this extreme step due to the alleged reluctance by police to take decisive action in tracking down her husband’s killers.

Kanhai Rout, Mamata’s spouse, was allegedly murdered last week by some unidentified persons. Despite her repeated appeals to law enforcement, she insists that no significant progress has been made in arresting the suspects.

Mamata has accused the local police of financial improprieties, stating that they are more interested in settling the case out of court for monetary gain rather than pursuing a legitimate investigation. She has conveyed her grievance to the Superintendent of Police and the District Collector, yet she asserts that her efforts have been met with silence.

The woman has threatened to self-immolate unless justice is served. The local police have yet to formally respond to these serious accusations.

“My husband was killed on the night of July 8. I had invited the media to seek justice. I am not getting any cooperation over the nine days. I had met the SP, and he asked me to take some money in lakhs and withdraw the case. Why should I do so?” Mamata questioned.

“I want justice for my husband and do not want anything else. If justice will not be served to me, I will immolate myself in front of the Khuntuni Police Station,” the woman warned.

“Odisha Police will be held responsible for my death. Accused persons are moving scot free and police are not able to arrest them,” Mamata alleged in a presser.

Meanwhile, following self-immolation threat by the deceased’s wife in press meet, SDPO of Choudwar informed that two accused persons have been arrested.
