A man from Bolangir district was taken into police custody on Saturday for participating in unlawful online gaming activities that had led to his eventual prosperity.

Identified as Lakhyeswar Mallik from Paika-Samara village under Saintala police limits, he allegedly duped numerous individuals by enticing them into online games, thereby amassing considerable wealth. Following complaints from his victims, the cyber police moved swiftly and arrested him, a senior cop of the Police Station said.

Cash amounting to Rs 7 lakh was seized from his possession, and an account holding Rs 25 lakh has been frozen in connection with the case. Authorities uncovered luxury vehicles, including a car, a bike, and a pick-up van, adding up to assets valued at approximately Rs 2 crore. Since 2023, claims suggest he defrauded people of crores through these online platforms.
Bolangir Superintendent of Police Abilash G has issued a public warning against engaging in such illicit gaming activities. “Accused Lakhyeswar Mallik from Saintala locality used to invite others by hosting fake apps to play online games as well as to indulge in online betting activities. He was taking server access to do so. However, the victims were ultimately losing money,” the Bolangir SP said while briefing in a presser.
“We have seized cash of Rs 7 lakh, frozen an account with Rs 25 lakh in it, and 14 smartphones. A detailed probe into the case is underway,” the SP expressed.

Notably, the arrested man was forwarded to a local court later in the day.
