A businessman was shot dead at the Shree Krishna Vihar area under the Bayalis Mouza Police Station in Cuttack during Holi celebrations on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Bikash Mohanty, a native of Dhenkanal, who was running a business in the Nakhara region.
The accused, who hails from Kendrapara, shot Mohanty from a very close range, in which he sustained injuries on his head and died on the spot, sources added.
While the body is found lying inside a room, senior police officials including Cuttack DCP, ACP and IIC reached the spot to launch a detailed investigation into the matter.
“The accused and Mohanty together consumed liquor in the room following which they had an altercation. In a fit of rage, the accused opened fire at Mohanty resulting in his death. We have detained the accused and seized the firearms,” Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo said.
Though the exact reason behind the murder is unknown, it is suspected that past enmity might be the cause.
