In a devastating incident, a massive fire reduced a family’s house and possessions to ashes in Bahu village under Chandbali block of Bhadrak district on Wednesday, destroying valuables worth lakhs and shattering preparations for a daughter’s upcoming wedding.
According to sources, the blaze was triggered by an electrical short circuit in the two-room house of one Surendra Mallik. Within minutes, the fire engulfed the dwelling along with the kitchen, gutting gold jewellery set aside for the wedding, household furniture, and other valuables.
Mallik, whose son is a migrant worker, had planned to marry off his third daughter within the next four months. But the fire left the family devastated as everything they had saved for the occasion was reduced to ashes in no time.
Fire tenders from Chandbali and Gadi areas rushed to the spot and managed to bring the flames under control. Locals said that none of them attempted to enter the house to recover belongings fearing possible LPG cylinder blast due to the flames.
In the incident, a local youth, Bhaktahari Mallik, sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Bhadrak Medical College and Hospital.
