Blood shortage at VIMSAR in Sambalpur causes distress for patients
A severe shortage of blood at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla, Sambalpur, is causing significant disruption for patients.
In particular, individuals from Western Odisha and the bordering state of Chhattisgarh are feeling the impact.
Blood Bank Constraints
The hospital is reportedly struggling to meet its daily requirement of 100 to 120 blood units, leaving medical staff in a difficult position.
In an attempt to secure blood, the relatives of patients are often urged to donate, creating a particularly challenging situation for patients with conditions like sickle cell anaemia.
Families Facing Hardships
Numerous families, especially those unable to provide donors, are grappling with the current crisis. VIMSAR is a crucial medical hub not only for those in Sambalpur and Western Odisha but also for inhabitants from parts of Chhattisgarh.
Furthermore, there is an ongoing demand for blood donations from thalassemia patients across Western Odisha.

"Our patient needs three units of O-positive blood. Two of our family members have already donated their blood. However, there is still a shortage of one unit of blood. No blood is currently available at the counter. We are helpless now," said an attendant of a patient.
Seasonal Challenges and Misconceptions
Officials have noted that this shortage is an annual occurrence often exacerbated during the summer. Myths regarding the adverse effects of blood donation, such as weakness or loss of energy, deter potential donors significantly.
Efforts to Alleviate Shortage
The reduction in the number of blood donation camps during the hot season, due to decreased participation from social organisations and educational institutions, has compounded the problem.
In response VIMSAR public relations officer stated that measures are being taken to organise more donation camps to address the shortfall.
"As people from the entire Western Odisha and Chhattisgarh are dependent on our blood bank, it is becoming difficult to cater to the need of 100 to 120 blood units of blood on a daily basis," said VIMSAR public relations officer, Debashis Mishra.
