Bhubaneswar KIIT University girl’s death: Ex-boyfriend’s abusive audio surfaces, DCP assures action

On Sunday evening, Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year student of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the KIIT University in Bhubaneswar allegedly took her own life after being under intense mental pressure owing to ‘harassment’ from her ex-boyfriend.

In light of this, a purported audio clip featuring the two interacting over a phone call has now been leaked and gone viral on social media. 

In the audio, the accused, Advik Srivastava, can be heard hurling repeated expletives and degrading the modesty of the girl. Further, she could be heard breaking down multiple times on the call despite the boy’s continued barrage of abuses.

Physical and mental torture:

Friends of the deceased girl have come forward with claims that the youth used to inflict physical and mental pressure on the girl during their three-year relationship. They also stated that Srivastava maintained an abusive personality, which took an extreme call on Lamsal.

KIIT University action:

Following the international student allegedly taking her own life, startling reports emerged alleging complete inaction from the university. Sources cited friends of the deceased who stated that she approached the International Relations Office (IRO) one month before taking the extreme step.

However, despite multiple attempts to seek help, she was allegedly dealt with negligently leading to mounting pressure and an eventual death.

Ex-boyfriend tries to flee:

Bhubaneswar police arrested Advik Srivastava on Monday on charges of harassment. However, not long before that, he had posted pictures on social media showing a flight ticket to Kolkata. The nature of events highlights that the accused was probably aware of Lamsal having taken the extreme step and trying to flee a possible arrest.

Bhubaneswar DCP assures prompt action:

Bhubaneswar DCP Pinak Mishra stated that he has taken complete stock of the situation and that his team addressed the needs of both the students and the university management.

“As per the students’ demands, we have properly documented and seized all incriminating materials like mobile phones and laptops and kept them in our custody to ensure there is no evidence tampering. Our team counselled and listened to the grievances of both the students and the university officials all through the night and will detail the next steps soon following a post-mortem,” he added.
