A suspected ammonia gas leak at the Paradip Ice Plant in the Paradipgarh industrial area of Jagatsinghpur district triggered panic on Tuesday, leaving at least four workers ill and prompting emergency response operations by police and fire officials.

The incident occurred when ammonia gas reportedly leaked from a cylinder at the plant, located in the heart of Paradip's industrial zone.

While the duration of the leak was brief, it was enough to create fear among nearby residents and temporarily expose workers inside the facility to the harmful fumes.

Preliminary reports indicate that four plant workers experienced breathing difficulties and nausea due to the exposure and had to be evacuated for medical care.

Police and Fire Services Respond Swiftly

Reports added that soon after the incident, personnel from the Paradip Lock police station rushed to the site to take stock of the situation and assist in rescue operations.

Personnel from the Kujang Fire Services Department also arrived at the scene and began water-spraying operations in and around the ice plant to neutralise any lingering gas and reduce potential hazards.

Eyewitness accounts confirmed that locals around the plant were frightened by the sudden emission of gas, although no reports of widespread harm to nearby communities have emerged so far. It is worth mentioning that the swift action of emergency responders prevented further escalation.

Cause of the Leak Still Unknown

Till the last report came in, officials have yet to determine the exact cause of the leak. It remains unclear whether the incident resulted from equipment failure, mishandling, or other operational lapses.

Meanwhile, police have reportedly sealed off the area and launched an initial inquiry into the circumstances of the leak, but have not offered any comments on the matter so far.
