A team of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) personnel led by an officer of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted a raid at a bakery unit manufacturing several food items.
The raid was conducted following allegations that the food items were being sold in the market without adhering to the prescribed guidelines under the Food Safety & Standards Act.
During inspection of the bakery unit, located in the vicinity of Sriya Talkies in Kharvel Nagar area of the State capital, the team came across many shortfalls in the packaging specifications of the end products. The owner of the bakery unit has been slapped with a fine of Rs 3,000 and has been warned to strictly abide by the necessary rules under the Food Safety & Standard Act, a BMC official who was part of the team said.

Satyajit Patel, the designated officer FSSAI (BMC) said that the staff (and owner) at the unit did not specify the manufacturing date on products which is a clear violation of Section 23 of the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006.
“We conducted a surprise raid at the bakery unit near Sriya Talkies and found that the products had ‘best before date’ printed on the packs. But the date of manufacturing stamp was missing on the packs. We have asked the owner to follow the rules. A notice will be issued soon while a fine of Rs 3,000 was imposed on the owner,” said Patel.
According to Patel, any food product which is meant for consumption within a period of 7 days to 3 months should have manufacturing and ‘best before’ dates printed on the packet.
Meanwhile, the owner of the bakery unit said, “We will rectify the mistakes which have been pointed to us by the officials. However, we have made no compromise on quality of the food products manufactured here,” he claimed.
