Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s Brahmastra Part 1: Shiva was a blockbuster. Directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Dharma Productions, this flick had some big names like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan , and Nagarjuna playing important roles. Incidentally, Brahmastra 1 was high on VFX and took almost 7 years to complete.
The plan for a sequel was always in the pipeline and it was quite evident with the way the first movie ended. While the first story was all about Shiva played by Ranbir, the second part will be a prequel that will depict the life of Shiva’s father Deva, and his mother. Due to some dispute with the production house, Ayan had earlier left the franchise and diverted all his focus on directing YRF’s War 2.
A buzz says that Ayan might return to Dharma to direct Brahmastra 2 but nothing is confirmed as of yet.
Bigger budget may force makers to shelve Brahmastra 2
After the massive success of Animal, Ranbir Kapoor is expected to hike his fees enormously. He might demand an amount closer to what Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan get and also a major share in the profit. Earlier rumours indicated that Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone will be playing the role of Ranbir aka Shiva’s parents in the sequel.
However, neither Ranveer nor Deeps have been approached for the role. Nevertheless, Dharma will have a tough time roping in two big stars to play Shiva’s parents in the sequel because they will have to pay almost equal paychecks to Ranveer Singh as Ranbir Kapoor and this can prove to be a big financial constraint.
If that happens, it will take the budget of Brahmastra 2 to 600 crore plus, which is more than RRR. In such a scenario, Brahmastra 2 may not happen. However, if Ranbir Kapoor plays the role of his father Deva as well as Shiva then it will make sense and also help the producer to manage the movie’s budget properly.
