Dark or fair, every person is beautiful in his/her unique way. However, in India, many people have a fixation on fair skin. A few years ago cosmetic brands promoting fair skin creams were supposed to be very normal. After a lot of hue and cry now they are selling such creams under the disguise of skin brightening creams.
And this is not limited to common people. Even celebrities have succumbed to such demands. Allegedly, actresses like Kajol and Shilpa Shetty who initially had darker skin have opted for skin-lightening treatments so that they look fairer. So this is an ongoing debate and it needs to be changed.
A couple of years ago Sai Pallavi took a major stand against this dictum by rejecting a fairness cream advertisement for which she was offered a 2-crore deal. Explaining her decision, the actress had said that she had seen her sister who is duskier go through the pain of having dark skin. The actress said her sister would eat particular vegetables she disliked only because their mother said it would make her fairer.

Elaborating on the fixation of Indians for fair skin, Sai Pallavi said, “When I was in school and college I grew up with friends who would look at a girl with a darker boyfriend and say, aye you can do better. You are way out of his league. And when you see a guy with a girl who is a little darker you end up saying I think there is something else, what does this guy see in this girl.”
The July 15 actress added, “We must at some point of time passed that comment. And right now it is coming back to us. It is a boomerang. So we must start putting out positive views about how we feel about others instead of pointing at others.”
Calling out social media users, the actress said, “And now you have this thing called social media since there is a curtain of anonymity you end up writing whatever you want. You just say something when you are not in a good mood but the problem is that it affects someone else somewhere else. So you actually have the power to change, respect others' feelings, and accept them for who they are. Just look at their characters and love them all.”
