Notably, 2016's Malayalam action-thriller Oppam, helmed by Priyadarshan opened with positive reviews from critics. While Govind Vijayan's story was gripping, Mohanlal's performance was praiseworthy. The film performed well at the box office and it became the third-highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all time. The film's story is influenced by basic threads of the English film Cape Fear (1991) and the Korean film Blind (2011). Later, the movie was dubbed in Telugu as Kanupapa (2017) and in Hindi as Prime Witness. Even, it was remade in Kannada in 2019 and Kavacha.
