Women’s safety at stake! 11 rape incidents in 50 days in Odisha pose serious questions

In Odisha, a surge in crimes against women, including rape, has raised alarm. An eight-year-old girl was raped in the Trisulia area, Cuttack. Urgent action is needed.

Odisha is witnessing a disturbing surge in crimes against women and rape cases in recent years. What is more concerning is the fact there has been a significant increase in reported cases of violence against women, including rape, harassment, and domestic abuse. The rape of minor girls has now emerged as a major concern at a time when everybody believes that there is an urgent need to arrest such crimes that are being reported almost every day.

As per available data, Odisha has witnessed over 11 rape cases in the past 50 days.

Today, the people of the state woke up to a heartbreaking incident in which an eight-year-old girl was raped in Trisulia area under Baranga police limits in Cuttack district. The little girl is now battling with her life due to severe bleeding and has been admitted to Sishubhawan, sources said.

The parents of the victim reportedly work at a nearby brick kiln. It is suspected the miscreant abducted her and took her to an isolated place where he outraged her modesty.

This is not the sole incident as such incidents continue to shake the conscience of people in society. To combat the rising tide of crime against women and rape, collective efforts from governments, civil society, and individuals are imperative. We must prioritize women's safety, well-being, and empowerment.

November 16: A seven-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to sexual assault after being kidnapped in Bhubaneswar.
As per initial reports, the minor girl went missing in the morning. After the minor girl was untraceable, her parents launched a search operation.  Later, she was found by a woman near an under-construction house near a temple. As the girl had some injury marks on her body, Lingaraj police rushed her to the hospital.

November 15: Palpable tension prevailed at Padmapur area in Bargarh district after body of a minor girl was found from an isolated place inside Dunguri forest. As the deceased minor girl’s body was found naked, it was suspected that she was murdered after sexual assault. 

November 4: The entire state was shocked over the gang rape of a college student during Dusshera. As per the allegations, the girl student had gone to a cafe with her boyfriend in the Puri Ghat police station area during Dussehra to celebrate her birthday. However, the boyfriend allegedly with the help of the cafe owner filmed some of their intimate moments on his phone there.

With that video, the boyfriend and his friends blackmailed her and raped her multiple times. The complaint was lodged on November 4, and the accused were arrested over the next two days.

November 2: A 32-year-old widow was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Odisha's Kendrapara district. A 36-year-old man was arrested after the woman lodged an FIR stating that her neighbour raped her when she was alone at home.

October 31: A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped by four persons under the Nayapalli Police Station area in Bhubaneswar. Even the accused shot the video of the heinous crime. Moreover, they also sought money from the victim’s mother by threatening to make the video viral. As many as 3 persons were arrested by Nayapalli Police in connection with the incident.

October 27: In a bone-chilling incident, an eight-year-old girl was brutally raped by her neighbour. Shockingly, the accused was an elderly man. He lured the little girl on some pretext and committed the heinous crime, family members of the victim alleged.

October 20: A 21-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by three unidentified persons in front of her fiance in a forest in Odisha's Nayagarh district. Though the incident took place on October 20, it came to light when the survivor lodged a complaint with the Fategarh police station on October 25.

October 14: In a shocking incident, a woman was allegedly raped at a village under Motu Police limits in Malkangiri. On the fateful night, of the Dussehra night, she was alone in her house as her father was away to catch fish. 

October 6: In a heinous act, a man allegedly raped her minor niece at a place under Raghunathpali police limits in Rourkela. The matter came to the fore after the family members of the victim lodged a complaint against the accused, who is a distant relative of the victim, at the police station.

October 1: Two unidentified miscreants allegedly robbed a flat and raped a woman finding her alone inside the flat in an apartment in Maitri Vihar police limits in Bhubaneswar.
