The Commissionerate Police on Wednesday arrested Rashmita Beura, sister of fake doctor Bidhu Prakash Swain alias Ramesh Swain who had allegedly married and defrauded multiple women.
Rashmita was arrested after a special squad found evidence of her involvement in the matrimonial fraud committed by his brother during questioning.
“We summoned the sister of the accused and questioned her. We held video conversation of the accused’s sister with some women whom he had married with false identity. The complainants identified her as the sister of the fake doctor and claimed she was present during their marriage,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bhubaneswar, Umashankar Dash told reporters.
“During investigation so far, it has been learnt that the sister of the accused was involved in the fraud of Ramesh in marrying multiple women on false identity and defrauding them. She helped the accused reinforce his identity as a doctor and win the trust of the perspective brides and their families,” Dash said.
Dash said the complainants have been asked to furnish details regarding the gifts they had offered to the sister of the accused.
“We have arrested her today and take her on remand for further questioning. We will bring her husband into the purview of investigation to find out what roles the couple played in the marriages,” the DCP said.
“We had summoned her husband, but he is absconding. As he has gone underground, we are growing more suspicion about him,” the DCP added.
The DCP further said two cars were seized from the possession of accused. The vehicles were registered with the help of fake documents and fake names. Another case has been registered against the accused for registering car with forged documents.
“The remand of accused Ramesh Swain is ending today. As we have received about 15 complaints against him, more custodial remand and interrogation is necessary in order to investigate those. Therefore, we will appeal the court to allow us seven more days remand of the accused,” the DCP added.
