The residents of Sara village under Kashinagar police limits in Gajapati district had their hearts in their mouths when they saw a man walking along the village road carrying the severed head of his wife and putting it on the verandah of his house on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Urmila Karji, and the accused as Chandrasekhar Karji. They were married for four years.
According to a source, the couple had gone to their field to plough it. While on the field, they had a heated argument over some domestic issues. As the quarrel escalated, Chandrasekhar lost his cool, reached out to a billhook and decapitated his wife.
Far from feeling guilty for his action, Chandrasekhar came to his village while carrying the severed head all along the village road. Then he put it on the verandah of his house.
Seeing this, the villagers felt a shiver run down their spine.
On being informed, a team from Kashinagar police station reached the village and detained Chandrasekhar.
A detailed probe is underway, police said.
The incident has sent a shockwave across the locality.
