In an incident that has sent shockwaves through the Gop area of Puri district, a lone woman was allegedly tied up and robbed by unidentified miscreants during a late-night burglary at her residence in Kundisa village. The victim, identified as Jhumuri Das, was alone in her house at the time of the incident.
Miscreants Overpowered And Looted Valuables
According to local sources, two to three armed miscreants allegedly broke into her house by forcibly opening the grill and main door. They then tied her hands and legs before ransacking the house. The intruders reportedly broke into the almirah and fled with gold and silver ornaments along with more than Rs 10,000 in cash.
Jhumuri’s family members and children were away at the time of the incident. Her son also lives elsewhere, which made her an easy target for the criminals. Sources say that while the robbers were attempting to break into the house, Jhumuri woke up but was immediately overpowered and restrained.
The next morning, villagers discovered her in a tied-up condition and immediately came to her rescue. She was in a state of shock but reportedly unharmed physically.
It is suspected that the miscreants were aware that the woman was alone in the house. Other members either stay in another house or some others outside the state.
“I was staying alone and pleaded the miscreants to leave me. Then they tied me up and assaulted me. Later, they looted the valuables,” alleged Jhumur,i adding that she had seen two miscreants.
A local resident said, “The miscreants had broken the locks using machine cutters and looted valuables.
Police Probe Begins
Following the incident, the Gop police reached the spot and have launched a detailed investigation. A forensic team is expected to visit the crime scene to gather evidence.
Police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby locations and questioning locals to gather leads on the identity of the culprits.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of elderly or lone residents in rural areas, and villagers have urged the local administration to enhance night patrolling and security measures in the region.
