Inter-state ‘motu-patlu’ robber gang busted by Sambalpur Police; key accused nabbed

Sambalpur Police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked several cases of burglaries by arresting a 50-year-old robber, who was allegedly the key accused of the notorious ‘motu-patlu’ gang involved in similar crimes in different parts of the country, including Delhi, Meerut, Rajasthan and Odisha. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Akhlaq.

Interestingly, the accused used to travel to different parts of the country inflights and used to leave the state after committing burglary. A pistol, several rounds of live ammunition, cutting and other lock breaking equipments have been seized from his possession, informed Sambalpur SP.

A bike, which was stolen from Jharsuguda district has also been seized from the accused. The other two members of the gang are still absconding.

How The Robber Was Nabbed?

Sambalpur Police had formed a special team after a day-time robbery was reported at the house of one Kailash Agarwal in the month of April this year. The key accused had looted gold and silver ornaments. During the probe, it was revealed that Mohammad Akhlaq and his associates were involved in the crime. Not only this case, the gang was involved in multiple burglary cases in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh in the past 6 months.

More About The Accused

Mohammad Akhlaq is a veteran robber and is involved in a series of crimes since 1992. Over 40 cases are registered against him in various police stations, including in Delhi, Meerut, Rajasthan, and 11 cases in Odisha as well. He mostly used to target lonely houses without CCTV cameras. He had gained so much expertise that he would commit burglaries in just 5 to 10 minutes.
Senior police officials informed that the gang members mostly used to leave the state after committing crimes.
