A harrowing incident of betrayal has come to light in Baripada of Mayurbhanj district, where a young man named Chandan Swain met with a tragic end. Originally from Kendrapara district, Swain was allegedly deceived by his friends under the pretext of joining a feast.  

Instead, it resulted in his abduction and eventual murder.

As per reports, some local people first spotted only a hand sticking out of the bed of the Budhabalanga River near Gomundi village on Thursday. They suspected a dead body might have been buried. They alerted their fellow villagers and informed the police.

Taking the information seriously, a team from the Sadar Police Station along with a scientific team and an executive magistrate reached the spot. The body was exhumed and it was identified as that of Chandan Swain. 

Prior to the recovery of the body, a missing report was lodged by Chandan’s family members at Kharavela Nagar Police station (Bhubaneswar) following his disappearance. 

On that basis, the police launched a probe and apprehended three accused who happened to be the deceased’s friend. 

“The Sadar Police Station received information that a dead body was spotted buried on the bank of the Budhabalang River near Gomundi village. Only its hand was visible. Soon, a police team, the executive magistrate and a scientific team reached the spot. The body was exhumed. It was found to be that of a male person and it is suspected that he was buried after being murdered,” said Sujit Kumar Pradhan, Baripada SDPO.

According to the deceased’s family members, he was murdered for money as his friends had called them to say that their son was with them and demanded Rs 50 lakh for his life. 

“They called us to say they would kill Chandan and his friend if their demand of Rs 50 lakh was not met. But by that time they had already murdered Chandan and the referred friend was with the caller,” said a relative of the deceased.
