The former law professor, who stabbed his father to death in Bhubaneswar, was under stress primarily because his father refused to lend him money to clear his debts, said police on Thursday.
On Wednesday, city dwellers woke up to a bone-chilling incident of a law professor stabbing his father, a retired NALCO official, to death at an apartment at Rangamatia under the Mancheswar police limits.
An educated son’s heinous act sent shockwaves across the city as well as the state.
Informing journalists about the case, Bhubaneswar DCP Pratik Singh on Thursday said the accused son, identified as Anirudha Choudhury had been under severe mental stress due to multiple reasons.

“During the investigation, we came to know that he had gone to Costa Rica to do his LLM. Due to some problems, he couldn’t complete his study there. At the time of joining, he had promised the university authorities to submit his certificates in due time. But he was facing problems in getting his degree as he hadn’t completed his studies. Eventually, he had to resign from his job” said DCP Singh.
“Besides his job tension, he had also a loan burden,” he added.
As per sources, he had asked his father, Sunil Choudhury, for some financial help to clear his loans. It was when his father refused to help that he reportedly decided to kill his father. In the wee hours of Wednesday, he stabbed his father in his sleep, causing his death.
Though his mother tried to save her husband, every attempt turned futile, sources added.
DCP Singh informed that the case is being investigated as per the new law.
