After Bhubaneswar, another real-life ‘Bunty-Babli’ in Rourkela police net
At a time when investigating agencies are trying to probe high high-profile fraud case involving Hansita Abhilipsa and Anil Kumar Mohanty in Bhubaneswar, a similar fraud by a couple in Rourkela has now become the talk of the town.
A couple is accused of running a fraudulent job scheme and has been apprehended by Uditnagar police in Rourkela. They allegedly targeted local youths with the promise of employment opportunities at the new court facility in Rourkela, exploiting the aspirations of young men and women in pursuit of stable jobs.
Investigators have revealed that the couple charged victims substantial sums in exchange for counterfeit appointment letters and fake identity cards. The monetary transactions were primarily conducted through mobile payment platforms.
During the operation, police confiscated numerous fake documents and identification cards linked to the fraudulent activities.
Senior police officials informed that the couple Laxmi Tanti and her husband used to visit the Court and other government officials every week. They develop friendships with people visiting these places and take money promising them to get their work done or government jobs. The couple had also prepared fake identity cards, forged appointment letters and other documents. The matter came to light after some people lodged a complaint after finding that the documents provided by the couple were forged.
The senior police official further informed that no such interview or exam was conducted by the Odisha government for the recruitment. Both the couple have been arrested and their bank and property details are being verified.
It has been ascertained that the couple had duped Rs 20 lakh from around 18 to 19 people.
“We are trying to ascertain the involvement of other persons in the fraud. We will take appropriate action if we find evidence against others, “said Nirmal Mohapatra, Deputy Superintendent of Police.
