Tumbbad’s journey has been unusual - when it premiered in 2018 the folktale-horror failed to find big audiences, despite rave reviews for its visuals and storytelling. Years later, a strategic re-release changed the narrative: the film found a second life on the big screen, closing the gap on its original budget and turning into a modern cult success that revived public and industry interest in the property. Recently, a major update on Tumbbad 2, the sequel to Tumbbad, has surfaced.

Sohum Shah Collaborates With PEN Studios

What began as whispers during the re-release has now been formalised. Sohum Shah - the actor-producer who shepherded Tumbbad to acclaim - first teased a follow-up in interviews and social posts after audiences returned to theatres. The sequel, Tumbbad 2, was later confirmed publicly and is positioned as an expansive continuation of the original’s mythic world.

The biggest update arrived this week. Sohum Shah’s banner is teaming up with Dr. Jayantilal Gada’s PEN Studios - the house behind recent blockbusters like RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi - to mount Tumbbad 2 on a larger canvas.

Trade outlets report Pen’s backing will bring deeper resources and distribution heft, signalling the sequel is being positioned as a high-scale fantasy-horror event.

Tumbbad 2 Filming To Begin From...!

Insiders and trade posts indicate principal photography is slated to begin in early 2026, giving the makers time to ready ambitious production design, VFX and an expanded storyline. Early reports also suggest a significantly larger budget and a push for pan-India and international visibility.

Fans should expect a darker, more cinematic continuation that aims to preserve the original’s atmosphere while broadening its scope.
