Celebrated playback singer Shreya Ghoshal has voiced strong criticism against the growing trend of lip-syncing during live concerts. Known for her crystal-clear vocals and effortless stage performances, the singer believes miming to pre-recorded tracks undermines the essence of a live show and the effort required to master one’s craft.

Speaking candidly during a podcast with entrepreneur and content creator Raj Shamani, Ghoshal did not mince words while sharing her perspective on the issue.
‘Lip-Syncing Is Just Lazy Work’
During the conversation, Ghoshal described lip-syncing as a shortcut that reflects a lack of dedication from performers.
“That’s just a lazy act. Apne mehanat nahi kari (You haven’t put in the hard work). In my personal opinion, it’s not a good approach,” she said.
For the singer, live concerts represent the true test of an artist’s ability. She emphasised that singers should strive to deliver performances that match the expectations of audiences who pay to hear their voices live.
Staying True to Artistic Standards
Ghoshal further explained that she holds herself to strict artistic principles. According to her, any performance that fails to meet her own standards is difficult to accept. “I can’t discredit what the audience likes, but I have certain principles as an artist,” she said.
“I have a problem with any performance of mine being played publicly that I myself wouldn’t even be able to listen to,” said Ghoshal.
She added that artists must continuously refine their skills rather than rely on past achievements.
“Either you work hard on your craft because you’ve earned that crown or throne — don’t take it lightly thinking you’ve already achieved it. You have to work hard every single day.”
Lip-Syncing Debate Rekindled
Ghoshal’s remarks come at a time when the debate around live singing has resurfaced. Recently, singer and rapper AP Dhillon faced criticism after appearing to lip-sync his hit song “With You” during an episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show. The moment drew backlash from viewers who expected a live performance.
