A 36-year-old Chinese man who hoped to make a positive impression on his girlfriend’s parents by losing weight has died following gastric bypass surgery, a tragedy now prompting his family to question whether adequate medical assessments and timely intervention were carried out.
A Weight-Loss Decision Driven by Hope
Known by the pseudonym Li Jiang, the man from Henan’s Xinxiang city stood 174 cm tall and weighed over 130 kg. After years of struggling with obesity, Li chose to undergo bariatric surgery ahead of an important family meeting tied to his relationship.
“He wanted to slim down before meeting her parents… he was preparing for marriage,” his brother shared.
Surgery Successful, but Sudden Decline Follows
Li was admitted to the Ninth People’s Hospital in Zhengzhou on September 30, and his gastric bypass surgery was performed on October 2. Initially, all appeared well: he spent a night in the ICU and was moved to a general ward.
But on October 4, Li’s condition deteriorated without warning. He was found not breathing at 6.40 am and rushed back to the ICU. Despite emergency treatment, he died the next day of respiratory failure.

Family Raises Concerns Over Evaluation and Monitoring
Medical records revealed Li had metabolic syndrome, hypertension, fatty liver, and severe snoring, all factors that increase surgical risk. His family now questions whether these conditions were thoroughly assessed and whether post-op complications were addressed quickly enough.
Hospital Response and Autopsy Request
The hospital maintains that Li met all surgical criteria and that the staff responded promptly. Both parties have requested the Health Commission conduct an autopsy, calling it the most authoritative way to determine the cause of death.
A Tragic Loss Awaiting Answers
As investigations proceed, Li’s death highlights the need for rigorous evaluation and vigilant post-operative care — especially for high-risk patients seeking life-changing surgery.
