Yet, in the midst of this chaos, a deeply moving story has emerged. A pack of stray dogs transformed into silent protectors/guardians for an abandoned newborn in West Bengal, shielding him through a long, cold night.

Circle of Protection at Dawn

According to reports, the pack formed a tight ring around the tiny infant outside the toilet of a house in Nabadwip, guarding him through the vulnerable early hours of Monday. Their vigil ended only when a local woman arrived and lifted the baby to safety.

Residents of Swarupnagar Rail Colony, situated nearly 10km from the holy town of Mayapur, had heard faint cries, yet most assumed they were coming from a nearby home, unaware that a child lay helpless under the open sky.

A Woman’s Courage and a Child’s Fight

At daybreak, Radha Bhowmick headed towards the toilet when she froze at the sight of the infant surrounded by dogs. Without hesitation, she picked up the baby boy and called out for help. Her niece-in-law, Priti Bhowmick, rushed him to Maheshganj Hospital.

Soon after, the child was shifted to Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital for better care. Doctors found no external injuries. There was some blood on the baby's head, believed to be from birth - a sign that he had likely been abandoned mere hours earlier.

Who Left Him Behind?

Police in Nabadwip suspect that the newborn was abandoned shortly after birth, possibly by someone from the locality. Childline officials and the police are jointly probing the matter and have informed the Child Welfare Committee to ensure long-term care for the child.

A Heartfelt Reminder

Later, Bhowmick expressed a thought that pierced the community with emotion: "Those dogs, the ones we often chase away, did what many humans wouldn't. They kept the baby alive."

In a time when stray dogs are widely feared, the compassion displayed by these animals stands as a humbling reminder - humanity is not owned exclusively by humans.

Not the First Time

Reportedly, similar incidents have occurred in the past, including one in Kolkata nine years ago. On that occasion, four stray dogs sat protectively around a newborn girl, chased away crows and stood guard until she was found.
