After Bangladesh’s dramatic exit from the T20 World Cup 2026, attention has swiftly shifted to Pakistan, with speculation rife over whether the 2009 champions could follow a similar path. As debates intensified, Pakistan found itself at the centre of cricket chatter not just for its potential decision, but also for the internet storm that followed.
Adding a dose of humour to an otherwise tense situation, Iceland Cricket took a cheeky dig at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Reacting to uncertainty around Pakistan’s stance, the Iceland Cricket X account jokingly declared it was ready to replace Pakistan if they pulled out of the tournament starting on February 7.
“We really need Pakistan to decide soon upon their participation in the T20 WC,” the post read, humorously highlighting the “logistical nightmare” of arranging last-minute travel from Keflavik to Colombo. The punchline? Their opening batter being an insomniac. A mock travel screenshot only amplified the viral moment.
The drama follows the ICC’s decision last week to remove Bangladesh from the tournament and replace them with Scotland. Bangladesh reiterated its refusal to tour India, citing security concerns, a move that sparked protests from Pakistan, who criticised the ICC’s handling of the situation.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, after meeting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, confirmed that all options remain open, with a final decision expected by Friday or Monday.
Squad Ready, Decision Pending
Despite the uncertainty, Pakistan have already announced their squad for the 20-team tournament, nearly identical to the group set to face Australia.
As cricket politics and social media banter collide, fans now wait for Pakistan’s call hoping the headlines shift from jokes and speculation back to on-field action.
