MS Dhoni
As the countdown begins for the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where MS Dhoni is set to don the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) jersey once again, a revealing story from his international career has resurfaced.
Former India selector Jatin Paranjpe recently opened up about the sensitive moment when the selection panel informed Dhoni that his tenure as India’s white-ball captain had come to an end. In a recent interaction, Paranjpe described the atmosphere as tense and emotionally charged.
He recalled that Dhoni was at the crease during a practice session when then-chief selector MSK Prasad and he gathered the courage to approach him. The selectors had carefully rehearsed how to communicate the decision respectfully to one of India’s most iconic leaders.
When they finally conveyed that it was time to move forward with a new captain, Dhoni’s reaction surprised them. Instead of questioning the move, he calmly accepted it. According to Paranjpe, Dhoni agreed it was the right call and simply asked what was required from him. When told that an official written confirmation was necessary, Dhoni promptly sent an email that very night.

More importantly, he assured the selectors that he would fully support his successor, Virat Kohli, affectionately known as 'Chiku'. Dhoni reportedly emphasised that he would stand by Kohli like a brother and contribute wholeheartedly to the team’s success.
The decision, however, sparked widespread debate and criticism at the time. Paranjpe acknowledged that the selection committee faced heavy backlash but maintained that such difficult calls are part of the responsibility that comes with the role.
