To mark World Cancer Day, the Odisha Television Network (OTV) organised a mini-marathon in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, aiming to raise awareness about cancer and promote a healthy lifestyle.

The marathon was flagged off from the Government Polytechnic campus on Xavier Road and witnessed enthusiastic participation from thousands of people across age groups and social backgrounds. Students, fitness enthusiasts, and socially conscious citizens turned the run into a moving campaign for cancer awareness.

The initiative sought to sensitise the public to the growing burden of cancer and highlight the importance of prevention, early diagnosis and timely treatment. Participants carried placards advocating a cancer-free world and stressing the need for collective responsibility in combating the disease.

Speaking on the occasion, Jagi Mangat Panda, Managing Director, Odisha Television Network, said OTV has been organising mini marathons for over 15 years and has focused on cancer awareness in recent years.

“Cancer is a widespread disease, but it can be fought with good health practices and timely intervention. Today’s initiative is about creating awareness among people,” she said.
She added that the event also symbolised solidarity with cancer survivors and those who have fought the disease bravely. “Cancer is curable if detected early and if we take proper care of our health.”

Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling lauded the initiative, saying the mini-marathon sends a strong message across society.
“There is a need to change our lifestyle and take appropriate steps to protect ourselves. Regular yoga, pranayama, healthy habits, along with screening and testing, are essential,” he said.

Chief guest S. Dev Dutta Singh, Twin City Police Commissioner, described cancer as a growing menace and termed OTV’s effort commendable.
“While research is still progressing, lifestyle changes can help protect us from the disease,” he noted.

Observed globally on February 4, World Cancer Day aims to unite people in the fight against cancer and inspire action at both individual and community levels. The OTV mini marathon received an encouraging response, with organisers urging citizens to continue supporting awareness initiatives and work towards building a healthier, cancer-free society.
