Wedding procession turns violent in Ganjam; Panchayat Samiti Member among 4 critically injured

Four persons, including a Panchayat Samiti member, were critically injured in a violent attack following a dispute during a wedding procession in Odisha’s Ganjam district late Friday night.

The incident occurred at Kusapur village under the Purusottampur police station limits. According to reports, a wedding procession was passing through the village when a group of youths allegedly began pelting bricks and stones. Local residents objected to the act and warned the youths to stop, following which the situation escalated.

Police sources said that after the initial confrontation, around 10 to 12 youths allegedly returned to the village and forcibly entered the houses of those who had opposed their actions.

House Trespass And Assault

The assailants reportedly attacked villagers using swords and iron rods. Four persons, including Baghala Panchayat Samiti member Prakash Chandra Nahak, sustained serious injuries in the assault.

Local residents immediately rushed the injured to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for treatment. Hospital authorities said the condition of the injured was stable at the time of reporting.

Police Investigation Underway

On receiving information, police reached the spot and initiated an investigation into the incident. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the youths were under the influence of alcohol when they allegedly began pelting stones, which triggered the altercation and later turned violent.

Police officials said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those involved in the attack. Investigators are also examining the sequence of events that led to the violence.

Political Angle Being Examined

Sources said police are not ruling out any angle at this stage. A possible political motive behind the attack is also being examined, although no such link had been established at the time of filing this report.
