An exchange of fire took place between Maoists and security personnel in the Karada forest of Kandhamal district of Odisha, with reports indicating casualties among the Maoist group on Sunday.

The gun battle occurred near Nadabadi village and continued for nearly one and a half hours, according to initial inputs.

Intelligence-Based Operation Launched

Security personnel had reportedly received intelligence that nearly 30 Maoists were present in the area. Acting on the input, the Special Operations Group (SOG) launched a combing and search operation in the forest. During the operation, an exchange of fire broke out between the Maoists and the police team.

The gunfire was still continuing at the time of reporting. Officials indicated that the operation was initiated specifically on the basis of information regarding Maoist movement in the region.

Casualties Reported Among Maoists

According to reports, several Maoists died during the operation, while multiple others are believed to have been killed or injured in the exchange. However, the exact number of casualties has not been officially confirmed.

Sources further stated that following the prolonged exchange of fire, it is suspected that some of the remaining Maoists fled from the area.

Combing Operation Continues

Security personnel teams are continuing the combing operation in the forest area. The search operation was still underway at the time of reporting.

Security forces have been regularly conducting combing operations as part of efforts aimed at freeing India of Maoists by March 2026.
