Odisha Police SI sends youth to carry out probe; Bhadrak SP suspends officer

In a move underscoring accountability within the police force, Sub-Inspector Karthik Jena of Gramanchal Police Station has been suspended by Bhadrak SP for negligence and dereliction of duty.

The suspension follows revelations that SI Jena failed to personally carry out an ongoing investigation in Rasikabad village. Instead, he allegedly sent a youth, identified as Piyush Ranjan Panda, on a police bike to carry out the official duties, with Panda even identifying himself as the SI.

The case involved a man accused of marrying five women, and SI Jena was assigned to conduct an investigation into the matter. When two of the accused’s wives planned to visit the village, they requested Jena’s presence. Rather than attending himself, the SI sent Panda in his place. The suspicion of locals grew over the youth posing as the officer, and they informed the authorities.

A police team later visited the village and confirmed that the investigation had been conducted by the youth, raising serious concerns about supervision and adherence to protocol.

Police officials stated that SI Jena’s actions amounted to acting beyond lawful authority, prompting his immediate suspension.

Additional SP Arup Abhisek Behera said, “The SI had sent a youth to the spot for investigation, which is acting beyond lawful authority. He has been placed under suspension. The youth has been detained, and further investigation is ongoing.”

The Bhadrak SP emphasized that strict action will continue against any officer found neglecting duties, reinforcing the need for professionalism and accountability within the force.
