An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police posted at Balianta Police Station in Bhubaneswar was arrested by Odisha Vigilance on Thursday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe in connection with a family dispute case.
The accused officer, ASI Somanath Palei, was the Investigating Officer (IO) in the matter and had allegedly assured the complainant of extending help in the case in exchange for illegal gratification.
According to Vigilance officials, Palei demanded Rs 4,000 from the complainant and also threatened him with arrest if the amount was not paid. Distressed by the demand and the intimidation, the complainant approached the Odisha Vigilance, following which a trap was laid.
The Vigilance team caught the ASI red-handed while accepting the bribe inside Balianta Police Station. The entire tainted amount was recovered from his possession and seized as evidence.
After the successful trap, Vigilance sleuths launched simultaneous searches at three locations linked to Palei to investigate possible disproportionate assets. These searches are currently underway.
