Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi laid the foundation stone on Sunday for an ambitious mega water supply project, aimed at ensuring continuous access to safe drinking water. After completion, the residents of Sambalpur will receive a round-the-clock (24x7) supply of purified drinking water with this water infrastructure project in the city.

The project will be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 451.24 crore. As part of the initiative, nearly 340 kilometres of water pipelines will be laid across Sambalpur city to strengthen the distribution network and ensure a uniform water supply.

Once completed, the project is expected to supply around 100 million litres of pure drinking water per day, addressing the city’s long-standing water scarcity issues. The facility will benefit nearly five lakh residents living in 41 wards of the city.

Speaking at the event, the CM said the project would bring a significant improvement in the quality of life of the people and enhance overall living standards in the region. Officials stated that the mega drinking water project marks a major step towards sustainable urban development and improved public health infrastructure in Sambalpur.

The CM further stated that this project is part of the ‘Drink-From-Tap’ initiative under the Central government’s AMRUT 2.0 scheme. Under this, city residents will be able to drink water directly from the tap without the need for separate filtration.

“In addition, an intake well and two modern water treatment plants will be constructed. The two treatment plants will be set up—one at Sambalpur with a capacity of 65 MLD and another at Burla with a capacity of 35 MLD,” the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated.

On this occasion, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Rural Development Minister Rabi Narayan Naik, Sambalpur MLA Jayanarayan Mishra, former MLA Nauri Naik, and Sambalpur district Collector Siddheshwar Baliram Bondar, among others, were present.
