In a significant administrative decision ahead of the annual Khandagiri Mela in Bhubaneswar, it has been decided that obscene dance performances will not be permitted during the festival this year. The decision was announced by Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das following a preparatory meeting held on Friday to review arrangements for the upcoming event.
The meeting, convened by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), focused on ensuring comprehensive security, effective crowd management, and enhanced facilities for devotees and visitors. Addressing the media after the meeting, the Mayor outlined a series of measures aimed at maintaining law and order while providing a safe and convenient environment for attendees.

As part of the security arrangements, around 100 CCTV cameras will be installed at strategic locations across the mela venue to monitor crowd movement and deter criminal activities. In addition, adequate police personnel will be deployed to prevent theft and ensure smooth conduct of the festival. Special emphasis has been placed on safeguarding women, children, and elderly visitors.
Facilities for saints and sadhus, including proper accommodation, food arrangements, drinking water, and toilet facilities, will be provided to ensure their comfort during the religious congregation. The Mayor also informed that jatra performances will be organised in seven designated pandals, allowing cultural programmes to continue in an orderly and regulated manner.
Reiterating the administration’s stand, Mayor Sulochana Das stressed that obscene dance performances would not be tolerated under any circumstances. The jatra committees have already been informed of the decision and have extended their cooperation to ensure compliance.
The civic administration aims to uphold the spiritual and cultural significance of the Khandagiri Mela while maintaining a family-friendly atmosphere, public safety, and overall discipline throughout the festival period.
