‘Medical negligence’ in private hospital claims youth’s life; family stages protest

High tension prevailed outside a private hospital in Berhampur of Ganjam district on Sunday after the family members of a young man staged a protest by placing his body at main gate of the health facility, alleging medical negligence.

The incident occurred at a hospital located on New Bus Stand Road, triggering chaos and public outrage in the locality.

According to sources, the young man was previously admitted to the hospital, and his health condition deteriorated. Allegedly, he died due to medical negligence while undergoing treatment. Following the incident, family members accused the hospital authorities of negligence in treatment and demanded strict action against those responsible.

The deceased was identified as Bijaya Pradhan, aged 30. He belonged to Tumba Sindarabada village under Patrapur block. He is survived by his wife aged 22, and a son aged 4.

An accident had occurred near Tumba and Bijaya had sustained a bone injury.

As a mark of protest, the aggrieved family and locals placed the body outside the hospital premises and sat on a Dharna (sit-in), demanding justice. The demonstration gradually led to heightened tension in the locality, with a large crowd gathering at the spot.

Police reached the scene to control the situation and held discussions with the protestors. Authorities are looking into the allegations, while further action is expected after an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.

However, no comments were received from the youth’s family or the hospital authorities in this regard.
