An attempted sexual assault on a woman and her daughter was reported at the Baramunda Bus Stand in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, prompting concerns over public safety at one of the busiest transport hubs of Odisha.

According to reports, the incident occurred when the woman and her daughter were waiting for a bus at the stand. 

The accused, identified as Pabitra Kahar from Beguniapada in Ganjam district, allegedly misbehaved with the duo when he found them alone at the location.

Police Conduct Raids

The Bharatpur police, who were alerted to the situation, reached the bus stand and conducted raids at various spots, reportedly. 

The accused was apprehended while attempting to flee in a bus and was subsequently arrested. A case was registered at Bharatpur Police Station, and the individual was forwarded to court.

Sources said that the woman and her daughter had taken shelter at the bus stand while waiting for their bus. The incident has raised questions about the security arrangements at Baramunda, which functions as an inter-state bus terminal. 

Despite the presence of private security personnel and a police outpost, the occurrence of such an act has drawn public concern.

CCTV Footage Under Review

CCTV footage and other evidence are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. Reports suggest that enhanced patrolling and stricter security measures are needed, as illegal activities and miscreants were reportedly observed in the area.

Meanwhile, the incident has caused unease among regular commuters, particularly women who frequently use the waiting facilities at the terminal.
