Man attacks wife with sharp weapon after family dispute in Odisha’s Kendrapara, attempts suicide

A disturbing incident was reported from Malipur village under Pattamundai Rural Police limits in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, where a man allegedly attacked his wife with a sharp weapon following a family dispute and later attempted suicide.

The accused has been identified as Pratap Malik, while the injured woman is his wife, Bharati. According to sources, the couple had a heated verbal altercation late on Monday night over a family-related issue, which soon escalated into violence.

In a fit of rage, Pratap allegedly attacked Bharati with a sharp weapon, locally known as a katari, causing serious injuries to her head and neck. After the assault, he reportedly fled the spot.

Woman Shifted to Cuttack Hospital

Hearing the woman’s screams, neighbours rushed to the house and shifted her to the Pattamundai Community Health Centre. However, due to the severity of her injuries, she was later referred to a hospital in Cuttack for advanced medical treatment.

Accused Found Unconscious Near Pond

On Tuesday morning, villagers found Pratap lying unconscious near a pond, with a bottle of poison and a blood-stained sharp weapon nearby. He was immediately rescued and taken to the Pattamundai hospital, from where he was referred to Cuttack for further treatment.

Both the husband and wife are currently undergoing treatment in critical condition. Police have launched an investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact sequence of events. Further details are awaited.
