The Khandagiri Mela, also referred to as the Magha Mela or the Kumbh Mela of Bhubaneswar, is held every year during the Magha month of the Odia calendar. It takes place near the ancient Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves, sites of significant historical and spiritual importance.

Religious Significance And Traditions

The fair holds deep religious significance, particularly for devotees of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, Samba, the son of Lord Krishna, was cured of leprosy after worshipping Surya Dev (Sun God) and meditating at the Khandagiri and Udayagiri hills following a holy dip at Chandrabhaga. The mela is believed to commemorate this episode and draws sadhus and devotees from different regions.
