Gold jewellery worth more than Rs 20 lakh was stolen after burglars broke through a wall of a jewellery shop late last night in Balasore district. The theft took place at a jewellery store located at Fata Arjun Chhak under Soro police limits, sources said on Tuesday.

According to the official sources, the shop owner, Rajendra Sahu, had closed the shop and left for home at night. When he returned the next morning, he found a hole in the wall of the shop. The miscreants had entered through the opening and decamped with all the gold ornaments kept inside.

The shop owner claimed that gold jewellery worth over Rs 20 lakh was stolen in the burglary. On receiving information, Soro police reached the spot and began a detailed investigation. Efforts are underway to trace the culprits, and police are examining possible leads linked to the crime.

“Last night, I had locked the shop before leaving for home. I had kept all valuables in the locker. When I reached the shop the next morning, I found the gold ornaments to have been looted,” the shop owner, Rajendra Sahu, said to OTV when contacted.

“I had some gold ornaments and more than 5 kilograms of silver jewellery. Some miscreants have barged into the shop and broken open the locker, the key of which I had kept in the cash box,” shop owner Sahu expressed.
