A major road accident was reported at Haladiapadar Square in Odisha's Berhampur on Saturday, leaving five people dead after a truck collided with motorcycles on the National Highway.

The incident triggered chaos at the spot, with bodies found lying scattered on the road and traffic movement coming to a standstill.

Truck Runs Over Bikers On National Highway

According to reports, the truck was travelling on the wrong side of the National Highway when it hit multiple two-wheelers. The heavy vehicle reportedly rammed into three motorcycles and ran over the victims, including crushing their heads. Five people were killed on the spot in the collision.

Around eight others sustained injuries in the accident and were rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Bodies Lying On Road, Traffic Disrupted

At the time of reporting, the bodies were still lying on the road, leading to a massive traffic jam along the stretch of the National Highway. Vehicles were stranded for a long time as police attempted to manage the situation.

Police and district administration officials rushed to the spot soon after the incident. An investigation has been initiated to establish the identities of the deceased and ascertain the exact sequence of events.

Administration Moves In, Probe Underway

It was not immediately clear whether the truck driver had been intercepted at the time of reporting. Sources said the District Collector was on his way to the accident site to assess the situation.

Further details are awaited as authorities continue rescue operations, clear traffic congestion, and carry out necessary legal procedures.

Odisha CM Mohan Majhi expressed his grief over the demise of the deceased individuals and offered his condolences. 

The Chief Minister announced ex gratia assistance of Rs 4 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) for the next of kin of every deceased person.

He also directed officials to ensure the best possible medical treatment for all those injured in the accident.
