Cyclone Montha aftermath: Landslides disrupt road connectivity to 4 villages in Odisha’s Gajapati Photograph: (File)
Landslides triggered by continuous rainfall under the influence of remnants of Cyclone Montha have disrupted road communication to four villages along the ghat road near Balibada village under Mohana block in Odisha's Gajapati district on Thursday. The collapse of portions of hills caused soil and mud to slide onto the road, creating blockages and hindering movement in the affected areas.
According to reports, the incident occurred following heavy rain caused by Cyclone Montha, which has weakened the hill slopes in the region. The continuous downpour since led to repeated mudslides, leaving the villagers anxious and concerned.
Locals Report Repeated Mudslides In Region
Residents stated that a similar mudslide had occurred earlier in the same area, and just as conditions began to stabilise, another landslide took place. This increased fear among villagers living close to the hillside routes, with transportation and access to nearby villages temporarily affected.
Authorities Begin Restoration
Local administration officials, along with the village Sarpanch, visited the site and supervised the clearing operations. A JCB machine was deployed to remove the debris and restore normal traffic movement. Officials are maintaining vigilance in the region and monitoring vulnerable areas to prevent further disruptions, reportedly.
