Odisha has witnessed multiple instances of communal and political unrest over the past decade, prompting authorities to impose curfews across various towns and cities to restore peace.
One of the most significant incidents in recent years occurred in Cuttack this October, when violent clashes broke out during the Durga Puja idol immersion procession.
The unrest led the administration to impose a 36-hour curfew in 13 police station areas, along with a temporary suspension of internet services, in a bid to prevent further escalation.
Balasore Unrest 2024
Earlier, in Balasore in June 2024, communal tensions flared in the municipality area, prompting authorities to enforce a strict curfew. The measure was aimed at controlling the situation and ensuring public safety as large crowds had gathered, raising the risk of disturbances.
Kendrapara Tension In 2019
The state has faced similar challenges before. In Kendrapara in January 2019, tensions between local groups resulted in violence, compelling the administration to impose a curfew until peace could be restored.
Bhadrak Communal Unrest
Even in earlier years, the district of Bhadrak witnessed severe communal unrest in April 2017 during the Ram Navami celebrations. The situation deteriorated quickly as mobs engaged in vandalism and attacked police personnel, forcing authorities to enforce curfew intermittently over several weeks to restore normalcy.

Soro Clash in September 2016
Likewise, in Soro in September 2016, clashes during Ganesh immersion led to a 12-hour curfew, with 19 platoons of police deployed to maintain law and order.
These episodes reflect recurring law and order challenges in Odisha, where curfews have often been the immediate tool to contain violence.
While the administration continues to take preventive measures, the incidents underscore the need for ongoing efforts to promote communal harmony and political stability throughout the state.
